In 1997 at “home” for vacation, I had the opportunity do document, on VHS, an imperio celebrated at Milagres. The procession went on foot from the Church of Santo Antão do the Chapel of Nº Srª do Pilar (or dos Milagres). For me was the only time I saw, that I recall, a procession with such dimension. Notice the bull cart, that nowadays are a relic. This footage was “magnetically” lost for years. The capture of all this relic to digital format, allows now its preservation for a much longer period of time, as the cassette was already in an advance state of degradation. Thanks to the handiness and experience of my good friend Daniel Jerónimo, an expert in the area. The Divino Espirito Santo (Holy Ghost) is celebrated in every island of Azores, and practically each one at its own way. This is ours!

Irmandades do Divino Espírito Santo

A “trip” to the past…

With Maré de Agosto at its best, influences arrived to the island from all corners of the world. In the 80′s, Extreme, among others, brought us some spectacular “views” of Rock world. Being one of the smallest islands in the Azores, the spirit of Santa Maria, has always been an attraction for foreign influences. In the “era” of Stormwind, Asvero, Orthodox, Multisom, Gente Nova, and more, having our own band was a dream! From the keyboard, as a Jean Michel Jarre’s fan, “The Lonely”, I became a drummer and vocalist, Jorge was the lead guitarist and back vocals. Márcio had barely laid his hands on a guitar, and in less than a few months was playing it. Davide, who never touched strings before, became a great bass player. Only those working with us, know how we came from zero, carrying our junk from one spot to another, as we had no fixed place. In less than four years we created 11 original songs and Lenda Viva was a dream that came true. 1991 was the beginning and unfortunately, 1994 was the end of it, but with work, help from friends as the former Orthodox, our good friend Jose Fontes, our families, the Aparelhagem da Câmara, a 16 channel Peavy amp mixer, if I’m not wrong, a cassette recorder, we turned the first floor of Forte de São Brás, into a homebrew studio, and were able to record our first and only demo of originals, just before it all ended. Out of several tapes, thanks to Davide, who kept the only copy that “survived”, I managed save these tracks, and after a few months I got the best possible audio, out of an 8 year old cassette. For the ones who remember the gear, and of course the out of tune instruments, the bad timing, gaps, lyric improvises and all the rest, that was perfectly normal for such a “green” band, I think we did a hell of a good job! The only thing I regret is that we had to follow our lives and abandon this project.

Anívia da Rocha Chaves

Going back to my roots, has given me great moments. Today, I post something I could call a finished small project. A tribute to my Great Grand Mother, Anívia da Rocha Chaves. To the ones that brought her artistic genes, her English spoken, her dynamism, and so much more,  here it is…
